History

The area was first settled by the Peter’s Colony in the early 1840’s and in 1846, the state’s first Legislature established the area as Denton County. The county was named for John B. Denton one of the early settlers. In the early 1880’s, the Railroad reached the southern part of the county bringing a healthy interest in the area resulting in greater growth. In 1896, the County Courthouse was constructed and the building is used for various municipal offices as well as a museum today. The county is made up of thirty seven cities and towns and parts of ten others.
